Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a Pakistani singer, musician, and qawwali singer. He was a master of the traditional form of qawwali, a devotional music of the Sufis, and is widely credited with introducing qawwali to international audiences. He was also a prolific composer and a highly influential figure in world music. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born in Faisalabad, Pakistan, in 1948. He was the son of Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, a renowned qawwali singer. He began singing at the age of nine and was trained by his father and uncle, Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. He made his debut performance at the age of sixteen. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's career spanned four decades and he released over 100 albums. He collaborated with many renowned musicians, including Peter Gabriel, Eddie Vedder, and Michael Brook. He also performed at numerous international festivals, including WOMAD and Glastonbury. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died in 1997 at the age of 48. He was posthumously awarded the Pride of Performance Award by the Government of Pakistan in 1998. He is remembered as one of the greatest qawwali singers of all time.

His family have been musicans and singers of Qawwali (Islamic devotional music) for six centuries. Nusrat's father, himself a singer, died in 1964 when Nusrat was about 16. His father had wanted his son to become a doctor because Qawwali is a very challenging style to learn. Ten days after his father's death, Nusrat had a dream where his father came to him and told him to sing, touching his throat. Nusrat woke up singing, and gave his first public performance at his father's funeral ceremony forty days later.
